Trail Support & Conservation
The New River Trail depends on dedicated nonprofits, conservationists, and volunteers to stay beautiful and accessible. Support these organizations to help protect and improve the trail for future generations.
Friends of the New River Trail
The only 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated solely to supporting New River Trail State Park. The Friends fund trail improvements, educational programs, habitat restoration, and volunteer events that the state park budget cannot cover.
Virginia State Parks — Direct Donations
Virginia's Department of Conservation and Recreation accepts direct donations to New River Trail State Park. Gifts in any amount fund park projects, interpretive programs, and habitat work that benefit every visitor and resident.
New River Conservancy
A nonprofit dedicated to protecting the New River watershed through land preservation, science-based habitat restoration, and community outreach. The Conservancy partners directly with New River Trail State Park and Friends of NRT to sustain the natural corridor the trail passes through.
New River Land Trust
Based in Blacksburg, Virginia, the New River Land Trust works to permanently protect farmland, forests, open spaces, and historic places across the New River region. Their conservation easements help keep the landscapes surrounding the trail rural and intact.
Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
The national nonprofit that helped bring the New River Trail into existence by advocating for rail-trail conversions across America. Supporting RTC supports the nationwide movement that protects and expands multi-use trails like the one in Fries and Galax.
Virginia Outdoors Foundation
Virginia's land conservation agency works to protect open spaces and natural areas throughout the Commonwealth, including properties adjacent to the New River Trail corridor in Grayson, Carroll, and Wythe counties.
